Track and Field to Compete at C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

HOUSTON - The Houston track and field team will travel to Rice University for the 2007 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 10-12.

The three-day meet begins on Thursday with the heptathlon and decathlon events along with the men and women's hammer throw and the 10,000-meter run. Friday will feature the prelims of the running events and finals in the field events. Athletes qualifying for the finals will go on to compete on Saturday along with the conclusion of the field events.

Following the championship a Coach of the Year and a Freshman of the Year will be named for both the men and women's teams, along with a Male and Female High Point Scorer of the Meet and a Male and Female Performer of the Meet.

The women's team enters the meet having won the last three team championships with the men winning in 2005 and finishing as runner-up in 2006. Neither team has finished lower than third place.

At the 2006 conference championships the women's team was led by Ebonie Floyd. Floyd was named the C-USA Performer of the Meet and the Female High Point Scorer of the Meet after winning the 100 and 200 meters and running the anchor leg for both of the relay teams.

The men finished in second behind UTEP, the host school. The team earned wins in the shot put, pole vault, 400 meters and the 1,500 meters.

Following the C-USA Championships, the Cougars will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the NCAA Midwest Regional. Ten individuals and three relay teams have already qualified for the meet. They include: Tremaine Smith (100, 200), Kolee Latson (400), Tristian Whitley (high jump), Ivan Diggs (high jump), Alex Bentley (pole vault), James Lee (discus), Ebonie Floyd (100, 200, 400), Quin'shundolyn McPherson (200, long jump, triple jump), Dayo Ogunniyi (long jump) and Ashley Bryant (discus). The men's 4x400 relay and the women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays have also qualified.

 

 

The conference championships will be held on the Wendel D. Ley Track at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium located on University Blvd. and Main Street in Houston. Admission is $10 for an adult single session or $15 for the entire meet.
