Track and Field to Compete in 2008 C-USA Outdoor Championships

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston track and field team returns to action this weekend, as the Cougars travel to El Paso to compete in the 2008 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 15-17. Competition in the three-day meet opens on Thursday with the beginning of the decathlon and the heptathlon. The men's and women's sections of the hammer throw and the 10,000-meter run will also be contested on day one. The meet will continue on Friday with the conclusion of the multi events, as prelims for the running events and the finals in the field events get underway. Runners who qualify in the prelims will compete in the finals on Saturday. The remaining field events will also conclude on the meet's final day. Following the meet, a Coach of the Year and a Freshman of the Year will be selected for both the men's and women's side of the competition. In addition, a Male and Female High Point Scorer of the Meet and a Male and Female Performer of the Meet will be named. The Cougars enter this year's C-USA Outdoor Championships after the men and women both posted third-place finishes in 2007. Neither team has finished lower than third during the meet. Houston returns a pair of individual champions in junior hurdler Seun Adigun and sophomore pole-vaulter Alex Bentley. Adigun took gold in the 100-meter hurdles, recording a time of 13.60. Bentley cleared a personal best of 5.06m (16-07.25), winning gold in the men's pole vault competition. The championships will be held at Kidd Field on UTEP's campus. Following the C-USA Outdoor Championships, the Cougars will begin preparation for the NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by the University of Nebraska on May 30-31. |
