AUSTIN– The University of Houston will be represented by 18 student-athletes and three relays at the 2013 NCAA Division I Track & Field West Preliminary Round starting Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

All 18 student-athletes qualified for the three-day competition by ranking among the region's top 48 in their respective events, while the relay teams ranked among the top 24. Individuals with the top-12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West prelims will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 5-8.

On the men’s side, the Cougars have two qualified in the 100-meter dash. Isaiah Sweeney, the Conference USA 100m, 200m, and long jump champion, is seeded No. 18 (10.38), while C-USA 100m runner-up Leshon Collins is No. 17 (10.35).

The duo will team with freshmen James Arnett and Issac Williams to make up the men’s 4x100-meter relay team, which took first at the conference meet with a time of 39.86.

Sweeney will also compete in the men’s long jump as the No. 11 seed (7.76m; 25-5.5), while Williams will take on a premier field of student-athletes in the men’s 110-meter hurdles at No. 12 (13.86).

Houston will have three student-athletes competing in the men’s 800-meter run. Junior Drevan Anderson-Kaapa, along with sophomores Yonas Tesfai and Anthony Coleman, the reigning C-USA 800m champion will race as the 29th (1:49.58), 31st (1:49.62), and 42nd (1:50.20) seeds, respectively.

In the field, sophomore John Horton will represent the jumpers in the triple jump, while junior John Fortune and school-record holder Rick Fenton will represent the throwers in the shot put and hammer throw, respectively.

For the women, junior Ngozi Onwumere leads the way for the Cougars as she will compete in three events. Onwumere will run as No. 24 in the women’s 200-meter dash, No. 20 in the long jump and as a member of the No. 15 seed 4x100-meter relay team.

The women’s 4x100m relay team, comprised of Onwumere, Anaszatzia Nguyen, Kiersten Brewer, and Alicia Perkins, finished third at the C-USA Outdoor Championships with a season-best time of 44.78.

Brewer will run along side of Onwumere in the 200m (No. 30; 23.69), while Perkins will compete in the 100-meter hurdles (No. 45; 13.74) and the long jump (No. 39; 6.00m; 19-8.25).
