Houston to be Well Represented at USATF Nationals

HOUSTON -- The Houston Men's Track & Field program will be well-represented at the USATF Outdoor Championships, where the program will send four student-athletes and two alums to compete for national titles June 21-24 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The meet will also serve as the selection meet for Team USA for both the 2018 Athletics World Cup on July 14-15 in London and the 2018 NACAC Championships on August 10-12 in Toronto.

Action for Houston's competitors will begin at 3:05 p.m. CT, Thursday with Amere Lattin in the first round of the 400-meter hurdles. Lattin surpassed the event's qualifying mark of 50.50 on five occasions in 2018, including his season-best and school-record run of 49.70 at the NCAA West Prelims. He enters the meet ranked 17th among Americans in the event. If Lattin should qualify, the semifinals will follow at 5:10 p.m. CT, Friday, while the final will be contested at 3:36 p.m. CT, Saturday.

Kahmari Montgomery will follow in the 400-meter dash, scheduled to open at 5:05 p.m. CT, Thursday. Montgomery set the school record in the 400 at the Mt. SAC Relays, when he ran 44.91 and ran under the qualifying mark of 45.70 five times in 2018. He enters the meet ranked No. 21 in the world and No. 9 among Americans. The semifinals of the 400 will be held at 6:20 p.m. CT, Friday, while the finals will be held at 4:30 p.m. CT, Saturday.

The first round of the 100-meter dash will cap Thursday's action for Houston competitors as Cameron Burrell and UH alum LeShon Collins hit the track at 6:10 p.m. CT. Burrell, the NCAA Champion in the event, ran a season-best of 10.01 to win the event at the Texas Relays and enters the meet ranked No. 17 in the world and 10th among Americans.

Collins enters with a time of 10.20 from the 2017 USATF Championships and owns a PR of 10.00.

The semifinals of the 100-meter dash will be held at 5:50 p.m. CT, Friday, while the finals will follow at 7:30 p.m. CT.

NCAA All-American Brian Barraza returns to the track for the first round of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 3:15 p.m. CT, Friday. Barraza posted a school-record of 8:40.25 in the preliminary rounds of the NCAA Championship to set a personal best and enters the meet ranked 25th among all Americans. The finals of the steeplechase will be held at 3:55 p.m. CT, Sunday.

Houston alum Chris Carter will hit the runway for the men's triple jump at the USATF National Championships at 5:30 p.m. CT, Friday. Carter enters ranked No. 6 among Americans and No. 9 in the world in the event this season after landing a season-best jump of 56-8.50 (17.28m) at the Tom Tellez Invitational.
