DES MOINES, Iowa -- Cameron Burrell finished fifth in the 100-meter dash and Kahmari Montgomery advanced to the finals of the 400-meter dash, as representatives of University of Houston Men’s Track & Field program continued their participation in the USATF Outdoor Championships on Friday at Drake Stadium.
Burrell advanced to the finals of the 100 as an automatic qualifier after clocking 10.00 to finish second in his semifinal heat earlier in the afternoon. In the finals, the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Champion, ran 10.04 to finish fifth in the field and second among collegians. He entered the event ranked No. 17 in the world and 10th among Americans.
In the semifinals of the 400, Montgomery completed the one-lap race in 45.11 to finish second in his heat and automatically qualify for Saturday’s 4:30 p.m. CT final. Montgomery ranked No. 21 in the world and No. 9 among Americans coming into the USATF Championships.
Brian Barraza opened Friday’s action for Houston in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The native of El Paso, Texas, finished the seven-lap trek in 8:49.15 to take 12th in his heat, respectively.
Houston alum Chris Carter closed the day with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. The 2008-11 letterman jumped 55-9 (16.99m) on his second trip down the runway. Carter entered ranked No. 6 among Americans and No. 9 in the world.

The USATF Championships serve as the selection meet for Team USA for both the 2018 Athletics World Cup on July 14-15 in London and the 2018 NACAC Championships on August 10-12 in Toronto.
