DES MOINES, Iowa –Besting his previous personal-record of 44.91 and setting a program-record in the process Kahmari Montgomery beat out the competition for a first-place finish in the 400-Meter at the USATF Outdoor Championships Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
The junior qualified for the finals of the event yesterday after finishing second in his heat with a finals qualifying time of 45.11. Montgomery headed into the event ranked No. 21 in the world and No. 9 nationally in the one-lap race. In the finals Montgomery posted both a personal-record and program-record with a time of 44.58, beating out competitors from Baylor, Tennessee, Nike and Adidas.
With the USATF Championships serving as the selection meet for Team USA and the 2018 Athletics World Cup, Montgomery’s win solidified his spot on the roster for both teams. The 2018 Athletics World Cup will take place on July 14-15 in London and the 2018 NACAC Championships on August 10-12 in Toronto.
