Lucas Mireles Earns Conference USA Postgraduate Scholarship
June 27, 2006 IRVING, Texas - Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowksy announced that Lucss Mireles, a member of the Cougar track and field team, is one of 12 recipients of the C-USA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards. The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the Faculty Athletics Representatives. The other award winners are: Terri Davenport, East Carolina, Women's Track & Field; Jeff Mullins, Marshall, Football; Rusty Clayton, Memphis, Football; Sarah Yoder, Rice, Cross Country/Women's Track & Field; Halley Rambally, SMU, Women's Tennis; Micah Stephens, Southern Miss, Women's Soccer; Brianne Darragh, Tulane, Women's Track & Field; Matt Wiley, Tulsa, Men's Tennis; Sebastian Falk, UAB, Men's Soccer; Tracy Fischler, UCF, Women's Track & Field; and Ingrid Goslin, UTEP, Women's Basketball. Mireles has competed three seasons as a shot putter for the Cougars. He placed sixth at this year's C-USA Indoor Track & Field Championships and had three other Top 5 finishes during the season. During the 2006 Outdoor campaign, he competed in the shot put and hammer throw. He had a fourth-place finish in the shot put and a seventh-place showing in the hammer throw at the C-USA Championships. His best finish in the shot put was at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational when he was the runner-up to teammate Jonathan Reeves. Mireles received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media Production and plans to further his education by returning to UH to begin a graduate program in mass communications and then attend film school. The Corpus Christi, Texas, native achieved a 4.00 GPA during the 2005 fall semester and was named the Outstanding Senior by the School of Communications.
