July 2, 2012
HOUSTON - Bryan Lewis recently joined the University of Houston Athletics Department as assistant director for sports performance and will work with the Men's Basketball and Golf teams as well as the sprinters for the Men's and Women's Track and Field squads.
In that role, he will create training programs that allow student-athletes to move more efficiently and effectively. He also will design and implement all aspects of the conditioning, agility and strength programs for those teams.
"We are excited to welcome Bryan into our basketball program and to the University of Houston," Men's Basketball head coach James Dickey said. "He has worked with some of the nation's premier college basketball programs and will bring a new perspective to the training of our team. Our student-athletes will learn and see improvement in their overall strength and conditioning under Bryan's watch."
"Bryan has earned an impressive reputation in the sports performance field and will be an immediate asset for our team," Golf head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "As a certified Level II TPI Golf Fitness Instructor, he is familiar with the sports performance needs of our program and will be able to educate our student-athletes in many ways. "
Lewis comes to the Cougars after spending the previous two seasons as assistant director of speed, strength and conditioning at Coastal Carolina. There, he worked primarily with the Chanticleers' men's basketball and men's golf teams while assisting with the football program.
He played a key role with the 2010-11 Coastal Carolina team that won the Big South Conference championship with a 28-6 overall record and 16-2 mark in league play.
Lewis spent two seasons at his alma mater - the University of Florida - from 2008 to 2010. He assisted with the Men's Basketball program and assumed lead duties for the men's and women's tennis and golf programs during that time.
In 2010, the Florida women's tennis team swept both the SEC regular-season and tournament titles.
Lewis earned cum laude honors from Florida with a bachelor's degree in applied physiology and kinesiology in 2008. One year later, he received his master's degree from Florida in human performance.
In addition to being a certified TPI Fitness instructor and a certified Level II TPI Golf Fitness Instructor, he also is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a United States Weightlifting (USAW) sports performance certified coach. Lewis is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Dance.
