HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field program mourns the loss of Cougar great Mark Baughman who passed away recently.
Baughman was a three-year letterwinner for the Cougars, and in his senior season he won the 1979 NCAA Indoor Championship in shot put.
"Mark was very instrumental in the foundation of our program here at Houston during the Tom Tellez era," track and field head coach Leroy Burrell said. "He led the team to its first southwest conference indoor championship in 1977. He was instrumental in developing several outstanding performers in the throws events as a coach and really touched every athlete."
In addition to being a national champion, Baughman was also a three-time Southwest Conference Champion (shot put 1977, 1979 and discus 1978) as well as being named to the 1979 NCAA All-American Team.
Baughman still holds the school record in the shot put with a throw of 19.57m (64'-2.5").
In 1983, Baughman returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach under Tom Tellez. He coached the men's throws athletes and held the position until 1990.
"He was one who I confided in when I was a student-athlete here. He will be greatly missed," Burrell said.
