Wesley Bray Claims Thorpe Cup
Aug. 1, 2014
HOUSTON - University of Houston track and field alum Wesley Bray won the men¡¯s individual portion of the 2014 Thorpe Cup Sunday in Marburg, Germany.
The Thorpe Cup, named after Track and Field legend Jim Thorpe, is an international track and field competition between the United States and Germany.
Each team is composed of up to seven men and women who compete in the decathlon and heptathlon respectively. The athletes receive a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events and the top five scores are added together to form the team score.
Heading into the final event, the 1500m, Bray trailed the leaders (Germany¡¯s Mathias Brugger and Ren¨¦ Stau¦Â) by 134 points. Bray clocked a personal best 4:23.63 in the 1500, nearly three seconds faster than his previous career best, to win the race and ultimately the decathlon.
Bray also set personal bests in the 110m hurdles (14.62) and the 400m (49.55). The decathlon also consists of the 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, discus, pole vault and javelin throw.
Bray finished the competition with a total of 7,862 points, edging out Brugger who finished with 7,829 points. Despite Bray¡¯s efforts Germany defeated team USA by a final score of 38,094 to 37,438.
