Aug. 3, 2011
HOUSTON - University of Houston track and field thrower John Fortune has added another piece of hardware to his repertoire. The sophomore was recently named to the USTFCCCA Division I Track & Field All-Academic team.
Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest in individual events at the most recent NCAA Championships. Those who earn multiple individual championship titles rank higher in the tie-breaking process, and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final tiebreaker to establish a winner. Separate awards are given to track athletes and field athletes for the indoor and outdoor seasons, resulting in four categories.
Fortune who was recently selected to represent the University of Houston in receiving the C-USA Spring Spirit of Service Award, and is fresh off of his first Conference USA All-Academic team, was one of just 420 students around the country, and one of just eight athletes from Conference USA selected to the list.
The Cleveland, Texas, native advanced to the NCAA Preliminaries in the shot put for the first time this season. He placed third at the C-USA Indoor Championships and took home fifth in the event at the conference outdoor championships.
Fortune, who continues to make a habit of excelling in the ring as well as in the classroom, is a two time recipient of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal. The chemistry major also serves as a track and field representative to the UH Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
