HOUSTON - Following in his parents footsteps, incoming freshman Cameron Burrell won a gold medal as a member of the United States junior men's 4x100-meter relay team at the Pan American Junior Championships held Aug. 23-25 in Medellin, Colombia.
The team crossed the finish line with a time of 39.17, half a second ahead of Jamaica.
Burrell qualified for team USA during the 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. He finished third with a time of 10.65.
The Burrell Family is no stranger to relays and gold medals. Cameron's father, Leroy Burrell, current head coach for the University of Houston track and field program, was a member of team USA's 4x100 relay team in 1992 and 1993. He and his teammates won gold at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain and at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Cameron's mother, Michelle Finn-Burrell, also won a Gold Medal at the 1992 Olympics as a member of the women's 4x100 relay team.
Cameron returns to Houston on a high note to begin classes and training for the 2013-14 season.
