Houston Student-Athletes Continue Community Outreach

Elena Kordolaimi and six other UH student-athletes spent time giving back to the community

Sept. 3, 2012

HOUSTON - Seven University of Houston student-athletes from three different sports recently kicked off the first week of classes by spending some time at nearby Generation One, including six newcomers who were introduced to the culture of giving back to the Houston community.

Two days earlier, the volleyball team visited Generation One, a local trans-denominational ministry located in the Third Ward of Houston, assisting them with studies, reading books, playing games and coloring.

Senior tennis student-athlete Maja Kazimieruk joined Houston newcomers Elena Kordolaimi of tennis, Angelica Thompson of track and field and Bianca Winslow, Marche' Amerson, Jessieka Palmer and Alecia Smith of women's basketball to visit with the children during their activity time. The Cougars played games indoors and outdoors for over two hours while establishing a relationship as mentors to the kids.

"Generation One provides an amazing opportunity for kids in the Third Ward, and we are so thrilled to work with them and act as positive role models," said Director of Cougar Pride Leadership Academy Sasha Blake. "We will extend the relationship and continue to partner with Generation One."

Generation One is committed to making sure that the next generation "Knows What Their Potential Is and Believes That They Can Achieve It!" To ensure this becomes a reality, we have set up an after school tutoring program as well as a mentoring program. We also use sports teams, counseling, professional tutoring, Bible studies, life skills classes and more to reach the next Generation. On the macro level our focus is to improve the overall quality of life for residents in the Third Ward. Our goal is to tear down dilapidated homes and abandoned buildings while rehabilitating existing homes.
