HOUSTON - The University of Houston men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2012 campaigns with a relay style meet at the Houston Invitational on Friday evening.

"The team did well," assistant coach Steve Magness said. "This meet allowed us to see where we were at. It was a solid opener but we still have a lot of work to do."

Houston's men's pairing of sophomore Yonas Tesfai and junior Drevan Anderson-Kaapa were the top program finishers, completing the course in 31:17 to take second-place overall.

Freshmen Trevor Walker and James Broussard finished with a time of 31:23 to take third-place, while John Cantu and Nathan Pineda and Anthony Coleman and Mark Fernando took fifth- and sixth-place respectively with times of 31:53 and 32:20. Sam Dufford and Lexington Turner clocked in at 35:06 to take home eighth.

For the women, sophomore Taylor Beer and senior Kathryn Ducommun clocked in at 37:07, placing second overall. Also running for the women were seventh-place finishers Julie Reinwald and Alexis Vick, and 11th-place finisher's Selena Sierra and Yasiris Gonzalez.

Reinwald and Vick finished the course in a time of 39:09, while Sierra and Gonzalez clocked in at 40:53.

The Cougars will take a week off from competing in preparation for the Rice Invitational on Sept. 14. The women will run a 4K course on the Rice campus, slated to start at 6:15 p.m. The men's 6K race is set for 6:45 p.m.
