BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Houston cross country teams had a very successful weekend, taking first place in both the men's and women's races in Baton Rouge, La. The Cougars had some obstacles to overcome, but in the end they pulled through.

"The course was wet and muddy, which affected our times a bit, but it didn't affect our ability to compete hard," said head coach Ryan Turner.

The women's side finished in first place with 40 points overall and an average time of 19:39. Sophomore Stephanie Aldea had a first place finish with a time of 19:01, and Brandi Witte followed in fourth place with 19:38.

"It wasn't our best race, but it was good enough to still win," said Tuner of the women's side.

The men's team finished first as well, with leader Nate Pineda finishing with a time of 26:22 and David Smith following with 26:24.

"Last week at practice they told me, 'Coach, just want you to know, we're going to win.' They set their sights on a goal and made it happen. I'm really proud of them," said Turner of the men's team.

The last time the men's and women's team both took first place was last season at the Johnny Morriss UH Invitational where the women finished with a score of 22, while the men finished with a score of 36.

Next up for the Cougars, the team will travel to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.
