CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Three Cougars finished in the top 10 to put the University of Houston men's cross country team in second place during the 2013 Islander Splash hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday evening.
Junior Yonas Tesfai was Houston's top finisher, winning the men's 8,000-meter run with a time of 26:31.5. Brian Barraza followed crossing the line at 26:36.4 and clinched the number two spot. Almost a minute later, teammate Anthony Coleman finished ninth with a time of 27:20.8.
Runners scoring points for the Cougars finished in the top 25. Sophomore James Broussard ran a 27:35.1 to place 12th, John Cantu crossed the line at 27:42.7 to place 14th overall, Lexington Turner finished 19th with a time of 28:13. 4 and freshman Gabe Lara was the final scorer for the Cougars crossing the line at 28:24.1, 21st overall.
Only six Cougars competed for the women's team Friday evening. Sophomore Selena Sierra was the top finisher in the 5,000-meter race, placing 14th overall with a time of 19:05.1. Freshman Amber Hawkins followed crossing the line at 19:19.7 placing in the top 20.
The team finished fifth overall with a season best 130 total points.
Houston Cross Country is back on the course Oct. 18 for the Alabama Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
