HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams competed in the HBU vs. Houston Dual meet as the final tune-up for the American Athletic Conference Championships.
Running in a 2-mile race, Mackenzie Ilari was the first Cougar across the line for the women, finishing fourth in 13:09.8. Claudia Santos was the next Houston student-athlete to complete the 2-mile run in 16:06.1 to finish ninth, while Meredith Sorensen finished 10th, and Maria Gonzales finished 11th in 16:07.0 and 16:07.6, respectively. Britani Gonzales (16:08.1) and Kristin Powell (16:08.7) took 12th and 13th, respectively.
The women finished second with 46 points.
On the men’s side, Blake Contreras was the first Cougar to enter the chute, finishing the 3-mile race in fourth at 15:44.5. Aaron Hurd crossed the line next in sixth at 16:43.0, while Liam Gallagher ran 16:54.6 to place seventh. Cameron Laverty (18:27.2) and Chris Wallace (18:27.5) rounded out Houston’s scoring by finishing eighth and ninth, respectively.
The men finished second with 33 points.

The Cougars kick off postseason competition with the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28. The championship meet is hosted by Temple in Philadelphia, Pa.
