MEMPHIS, Tenn.--The University of Houston women and men's cross-country teams captured fifth and sixth-place, respectively, and freshman Stephanie Aldea received Houston's first-ever Conference USA Freshman of the Year honor, Saturday at the C-USA Championships, held at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn.

Aldea finished the 5K in ninth-place with a time of 17:38. She received All-Conference honors, as well as freshman Starla Garcia, who finished 21st with a time of 18:19.

"We'll always put team accolades ahead of individual awards, but its hard not to be extremely proud for Stephanie (Aldea) and Starla (Garcia). They've both been inspiring leaders and great ambassadors for our program," head coach Ryan Turner said.

Freshman Megan Munoz finished in the 29th spot with a time of 18:31. Junior Erica Hannemann (19:14), and freshman Brandi Witte (19:18) finished 45th and 46th, respectively.

Overall, the women finished fifth with a total 145 points.

"Our women raced some of the best teams in the country today. We lost to two top 25 teams (SMU and Rice), Tulsa who has always been tough, and UAB who has finished in the top three at every meet they've ran in all season," Turner said.

The men took sixth in the 8K, with a total of 156 points. Freshman Anthony Jordan led the Cougar pack in the 28th spot, with a time of 26:51.

Freshman Nate Pineda placed 30th with a time of 27:00. Freshmen Andres Santaolalla (27:01), Jesse Rodriguez (27:02) and Stephan Keller (27:04), and juniors Mauricio Morales (27:06) and Antony Keller (27:09) finished 35th through 39th, respectively. Freshman Cole Bessner rounded out the Cougars in the 46 spot with a time of 28:18.

"We had a realistic chance of placing in the top five, but fell short by nine points. Four of our guys ran all-time bests and another ran a season best, so it's hard for me to be disappointed when individually we competed really well. We're really young, in time these guys should develop into a strong group for future seasons," Turner said.

SMU captured the win for the women's race with a total score of 40. Tulsa won the championships for the men with a total of 27 points.
