    MADISON, Conn. – The University of Houston cross country teams had a successful run during the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship as the men’s competitors all improved their 8K race times Saturday. 

    The men’s team finished fifth overall with three Cougars in the top 10 finishers. Junior Yonas Tesfai was Houston’s top finisher in fourth place with a time of 23:34.68. Freshman Brian Barraza followed closely behind in fifth at 23:36.60. Anthony Coleman finished ninth overall with a time of 24:00.62.

    James Broussard and John Cantu rounded out scorers for Houston. Broussard crossed the line at 24:54.65 in 33rd place followed by Cantu at 25:48.02. 

    Sophomore Selena Sierra was the women’s top finisher once again this season. She led the Cougars in the 6K race with a 21:53.09. Junior Taylor Beer followed with a 44th place finish and a time of 22:34.18.

    The women’s team finished ninth in the conference meet.

    Houston has a quick turnaround this week as the teams head to Waco, Texas, for the NCAA Division I South Central Regional meet Nov. 15.
