FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Houston men's and women's cross country teams concluded their 2012 slate at the NCAA South Central Regional at Agri Park on Friday morning.
Senior Kathryn Ducommun led the women on the 6K course, as she placed 50th with a time of 22:40.8. Junior transfer Chelsea Huebner and sophomore Taylor Beer finished 35 seconds behind one another. Huebner finished at the 24:06.1 mark, placing 102nd overall, while Beer followed with a time of 24:41.1 to place 119th.
"I'm proud of the way our men's and women's team competed today," Assistant Coach Steve Magness said. "Kat put together a fine finish for her last race of her career. She really went for it from the gun, and was rewarded with her best time of the year."
For the Cougar men, sophomore Yonas Tesfai had a stand out All-Regional performance and fell just short of making it to nationals. Tesfai crossed the 10K finish line first for Houston, clocking in at 31:19.3, placing 21st overall. Sophomore Anthony Coleman, who beat his personal best by almost a minute, and freshman James Broussard followed within a minute and half of Tesfai, finishing 36th and 88th respectively. Coleman finished with a time of 32:06.8 and Broussard clocked in at 33:43.6. Junior Drevan Anderson-Kaapa timed in at 34:11.0 (98th), freshmen Nathan Pineda finished in 34:15.9 (100th) and sophomore John Cantu in 35:43.5 (120th).
"Yonas put himself in the hunt for making nationals, but fell just a few places short," Magness said. This will give him a valuable experience for the next two years."
