WACO, Texas - Junior Yonas Tesfai and sophomore Selena Sierra were top finishers for the University of Houston's Cross Country teams at the NCAA Division I South Central Regional meet Friday morning in Waco, Texas.
Tesfai finished the 10K race with a time of 30:54.4, well enough for 18th place. The junior barely missed the individual selection for nationals. Freshman Brian Barraza crossed at 31:10.8 to finish in the top 30 individuals. Other scoring runners for the Cougar men were Anthony Coleman at 32:03.3, James Broussard with a time of 32:40.5 and John Cantu crossing at 33:33.2.
For the women, Sierra finished 43rd overall with a time of 21:56.4. Junior Taylor Beer finished at 22:55.6 for the second best time on the team. Amber Hawkins (23:29.8), Alexis Vick (24:14.6) and Maria Gonzales (25:50.3) scored for Houston.
The men's team finished in 11th place with 271 total points, while the women's team finished in 16th with 456 points.
The University of Arkansas swept the regional meet. The University of Texas took second in the men's race and received the automatic bid for nationals. On the women's side, conference rival SMU took second place and have auto-qualified for nationals. Those teams will move on to the NCAA National Championship next weekend in Terra Haute, Ind.
