Barraza Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

May 25, 2017

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Senior distance runner Brian Barraza has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for District 7, the organization announced Thursday.

Barraza was one of 10-student athletes to be named to the District 7 team and was one of just five men’s athletes from the American Athletic Conference to earn the honor. To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams, student-athletes must have completed one full year academically and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher.

Barraza made history for the Cougars during the indoor season after becoming the first Houston indoor All-American in a running event over 400-meters. Barraza qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 3,000-meter run after breaking his own school record and running 7:53.60 at the Husky Classic in Seattle. The senior would go on to finish seventh at the championship meet after running 8:00.69 to earn First Team All-American honors.

In the classroom, Barraza holds a 3.77 cumulative grade point average as a Kinesiology major. Barraza has been a member of the university’s Deans List in seven consecutive semesters and is a two-time member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic teams (2015, 2016).
