HOUSTON – After their original season-opener was wiped out due to Hurricane Harvey, the Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams will kick off the 2017 season at the Norry Hersey Rice Invitational on Friday.
Action begins at 6:15 p.m., Friday with the women’s 4,000-meter race with the men slated to follow at 6:45 p.m., in a 6,000-meter run. The event will be held on the intramural fields on the campus of Rice University.
The Cougar men return 10 letterwinners from the 2016 season, and welcome back redshirt seniors Brian Barraza and Gabe Lara. Lara is scheduled to make his return to the track at Friday’s invitational. Junior G.J. Reyna also makes his return to the track at Rice after finishing as Houston’s top runner in six of the squad’s seven meets a year ago.
The Cougar men will see three student-athletes make their Houston cross country debuts on Friday.
On the women’s side, Houston returns 10 of 12 letterwinners from a year ago, but will look to replace Selena Sierra who was the Cougars’ top finisher in six meets in 2016. Redshirt sophomore Meredith Sorensen returns to the Cougars after missing last season due to an injury and joins eight Houston returners and three newcomers for Friday’s action.
