HOUSTON - The University of Houston men's and women's cross country teams return to the course after a week off from competition for the 37th Annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational on Friday.
The women are slated to run a 4K course at 6:15 p.m., followed by the men running a 6K at 6:45 p.m. The course is located just off of Rice Boulevard between Sunset/Main and Greenbriar. Parking is free and is located in "West Lot 4."
"The Rice Invite will be our first individual test of the season," Assistant Coach Steve Magness said. "It will give us a chance to see how we stack up as a team and a chance to see how people respond to running a little fatigued. It's a slight step up in distance from our opening meet, so it will be a nice transition towards the full distances that the men and women will be running later in the year."
The Cougars opened their campaigns with a relay style meet at the Houston Invitational on Aug. 31. Houston's men's pairing of sophomore Yonas Tesfai and junior Drevan Anderson-Kaapa were the top program finishers, completing the course in 31:17 to take second place overall. For the women, sophomore Taylor Beer and senior Kathryn Ducommun clocked in at 37:07, placing second overall.
The field for this meet includes many teams ranked among the USTFCCA South Central Region's Top-15, including Texas A&M, Lamar, Stephen F. Austin, and host Rice.
The Cougars return to competition when they travel to Austin on Sept. 28 to take part in the Rouge Grass Routes Running Festival.
