Houston Set to Run at TAMU Invitational

HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams continue the 2017 season by competing in the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, in College Station, Texas.

The Texas A&M Invitational begins with the men’s 8,000-meter race at 8 a.m., and will conclude with the 6,000-meter women’s race at 8:45 a.m. Houston will be joined by host Texas A&M, Central Arkansas, Lamar, LSU, Louisiana, McNeese, North Texas, Prairie View A&M, Rice, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southeastern Oklahoma (Women), Texas A&M Kingsville, Texas State, TCU, Texas Wesleyan (Men) and UT Arlington at Watt’s Cross Country Course.

Watt’s Cross Country Course will also be the site of the NCAA South Central Regional in November.

Senior Brian Barraza returns to the course to begin his final campaign at the Texas A&M Invitational. Barraza will look for his second individual title at the meet in College Station after winning the event in 2015 with a time of 23:38.4.

Junior G.J. Reyna looks to continue an impressive start to his season. Reyna ran 19:49.72 in the 6,000-meter race to win the Rice Invitational, while senior Gabe Lara will also be in action after finishing fourth in 19:54.55 a week ago.

Devin Fahey, Cameron Laverty and Aaron Hurd rounded out the top-5 at Rice and will return to action in College Station, while Blake Contreras will make his season debut.



For the women, Ebony White and Meredith Sorensen will hope to build on strong performances at the season-opening meet. White ran 14:38.20 in the women’s 4K, while Sorensen crossed in 14:38.96 as the two finished right on each other’s heels in 12th and 13th respectively.

The women’s top-5 from the first meet of the season will each be in action on Saturday as Britani Gonzales, Emely Morgado and Jahnavi Schneider will also return to action.

The Cougars will have three weeks to prepare for their next competition as they head to the Pre-National meet in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 14. The Pre-National meet will be Houston’s final test before the post season begins and is run on the same course as the NCAA Championship meet.
