Houston Cross Country Finishes Conference USA Championship on Good Note

Lake Christi, NC - Lake Christi, NC - In the Conference USA Championship for Cross Country on Saturday, the men's and women's teams finished 10th and 4th respectively. The women's team finished below only Marquette, South Florida and TCU. The final points total was 137 with an average time of 21:33.50. The top finishers for the women's team were Jessica Oakes who finished first for the Cougars and 19th overall at 21:09.0 in the 6K. She was also top finisher for the Cougars in three other runs this year. The second Cougar to cross the line was Kelly McCarty, who finished two behind Oakes and placed 22nd with a time of 21:19.3. This is her best time this season in 6K races beating her previous best of 22:57.81 in the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational. Third for the Cougars was Junior Heather Howse finishing #28 with a time of 21:32.5. The entire Cougar squad finished in the top 61 of 101 and Top six finishers (receiving team points) finished in the top half of the pack. Other times for Houston's women's runners are 33rd Julie Perez at 21:48.0, 40th Monica Reyna at 21:58.7, 47th Terri Littlepage at 22:12.3, 50th Vanessa Golston at 22:22.2 and 61st Veronica Ramirez at 22:42.6.

The Cougar men's team finished 10th in team scoring in the meet, scoring 245 points and averaging 25:46 with their six runners. The Top finisher for the Cougars was sophomore Jared Kuntz, Who finished 33rd in the 8K race with a time of 25:11.8. The next Houston legs to cross the line were of Junior Toartou Kargou who was 47th place with a time of 25:39.6. These top two Houston runners have also finished top two in the last three runs they have taken part in. The remaining runners for Houston finished 54th: Cole Dailey at 25:49.7, 58th: Juan Cardenas at 25:55.9, 69th: Jason Banes at 26:17.1 and 80th: Ronnie Martinez at 26:40.3.

Both teams will be back in action on the trails on November 10th at the South Central Regional Championships in College Station, Texas. The NCAA Championships will be held on November 19th in Greenville, SC.
