WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Cougar women enter the American Championships ranked No. 12 in the South Central Region and will vie for a top spot in the final standings. After not appearing at the 2015 championships due to redshirting, senior Selena Sierra returns to the course with hopes of improving on her 21st-place finish in 2014. The Channelview, Texas, native has been the Cougars’ top finisher in four of their five races this season including a second-place finish at the SFA Lumberjack Preview.

Maddie Brown also returns for the women after a 24th place finish in Greenville, N.C., at last year’s championships. Brown, who won the HBU Invitational earlier this season, was the top finisher for the women at the conference meet last year en route to helping the team to a ninth-place finish.

G.J. Reyna has consistently been the top finisher for Houston on the men’s side, taking the lead role in four of the five races this season. Reyna opened the season with back-to-back top-10 finishes at the SFA Lumberjack Preview (8th, 5K) and the Rice Invitational (9th, 6K). The 2016 American Championships will be the first for the sophomore.

For the first time since 2013, the Cougars will have a name other than Brian Barraza cross first at the American Championships. The then-junior helped Houston to at fourth-place overall finish at the 2015 championships, but is redshirting throughout the 2016 campaign.
