Cross Country to Attend American Championships Saturday

Houston Cross Country to compete at first American Conference Championship Saturday in Connecticut.

HOUSTON - The long awaited week has finally arrived as the University of Houston cross country teams prepare for the first American Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at the Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Conn.

The men's 8,000-meter (8K) race will begin at 11 a.m. (ET) followed by the women's 6,000-meter (6K) race at 11:50 a.m. (ET). The course is primarily grass with minimal sections crossing over gravel or paved roads and is entirely flat. 

Competing for the men's team are juniors John Cantu, Anthony Coleman and Yonas Tesfai, sophomores James Broussard, Trevor Walker, Nathan Pineda and Zach Stewart, and freshmen Brian Barraza, Gabe Lara and Matthew Parmley. All of the women's competitors will be running for Houston as well. 

As of Oct. 21, the Cougar men's team was ranked no. 14 by USTFCCCA in the South Central Region.

A live-streaming video of both races and awards ceremony will be available on the American Championship Central.

Houston will travel to Waco, Texas, for the NCAA Division I South Central Regionals in two weeks. Selections for the NCAA Division I Championship will be announced the following day.
