HOUSTON - After leading the University of Houston women's cross country team to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional, sophomore Stephanie Aldea was named to the Division I Cross Country All-Region Team, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday afternoon.

"This is a great honor for Stephanie and an amazing finish to her sophomore season," head coach Ryan Turner said. "We expect her to continue to receive more honors and accolades as her career continues."

Aldea finished among the top 25 runners, including six Conference USA athletes, to earn a spot on the All-Region Team. The Windsor, Ontario native completed the 6K regional with a time of 21:34.3, finishing in 16th place.

Prior to the regional, Aldea finished the Conference USA Championships in 17th place, earning a spot on the All-C-USA Third Team. The sophomore is no stranger to league accolades. Last season, Aldea made program history when she received Houston's first C-USA Freshman of the Year award. She went on to be the first female to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Christy Bench finished ninth at the District VI Regional in 1994.

In order to qualify for nationals as an individual, a runner must be one of four top finishers who are not on a qualifying team. This season, SMU and Baylor qualified as the top women's teams in the South Central Region. If Arkansas, who was nationally ranked No. 25 prior to the regional, had been one of 13 teams to receive an at-large bid, Aldea would have qualified as an individual for the second year in a row.

Aldea, along with the rest of the cross country team, is gearing up for the beginning of the indoor track and field season on Dec. 12 at the Texas A&M Early Opener.
