HOUSTON - The University of Houston cross country team will conclude its 2011 season when senior Wesley Ruttoh travels to the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday in Terre Haute, Ind.
Ruttoh will be the first runner to represent Houston at the NCAA Championships since Stephanie Aldea in 2008 and the first male since Sesar Figueroa in 2005. This also marks the first time in University of Houston cross country history that a coach has sent both a male and female runner to the NCAA Cross Country Championships as head coach Ryan Turner mentored both Aldea and Ruttoh.
"Wesley's had a great season and he's extremely excited to race this weekend," head coach Ryan Turner said. "Reaching the NCAA Championships is the pinnacle of our sport. It's such an honor for Wesley to have this opportunity and he's proud to represent the University of Houston, our program and our Alumni."
The meet is hosted by Indiana State and will take place at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. Racing is scheduled to begin at 11:08 p.m., with the women's race, followed by Ruttoh and the men at 11:48 p.m.
Ruttoh automatically qualified as an individual after placing sixth at the NCAA South Central Regional on Saturday. Ruttoh completed the 10K course with a time of 30:54.
The Kenya native will be competing for All-American recognition, as individually, the top-40 runners in each race will receive All-America honors.
A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from 11 a.m., to 12:30 p.m., on Monday via NCAA.com. In addition, highlights from the championships will be included as part of the CBS NCAA Fall Seasonal Show scheduled to air on Saturday, Dec. 18 from noon to 1 p.m., on CBS HD.
