Barraza makes his return to E.P. Tom Sawyer Park where he finished 10th in the seeded race at the Pre-National event earlier this year. Competing in an 8K in October, Barraza crossed the finish line in 23:22.1 to pace the Cougars.
Barraza opened his season with a victory at the Texas A&M Invitational, claiming the title for the third consecutive year. Barraza finished the 8,000-meter race in College Station, Texas, in 23:51.4 and helped the Cougars finish fifth overall.
With the season rolling over to postseason competition, Barraza posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships and the NCAA South Central Regional.
After running 25:06.0 in Philadelphia, Barraza earned his third All-American Athletic Conference Award and posted Houston's best finish in a conference championship meet since Tyler Stanfield placed second at the 2004 Conference USA Championships.
Barraza's silver at the South Central Regional in College Station, Texas, was his third top-4 finish in the event in as many years, and punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships. Barraza finished the 10K just two seconds behind the regional champion at 29:51.5.
During his sophomore season, Barraza finished 224th at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., before moving up to 60th the following year in Louisville.
