HOUSTON - Sophomore runner Brandi Witte was named to the 2009 Conference USA Cross Country Women's All-Academic Team, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon."

"Having Brandi on our team has been an honor," head coach Ryan Turner said. "It takes a committed individual to understand the importance of being both a student and an athlete. Her parents have done a great job raising such a talented young woman."

Witte joins 12 C-USA student-athletes, who were honored based on their performance in the classroom and contribution on the field. Members must earn a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and be a regular participant on their team.

The sophomore is majoring in nutrition and, over the past four semesters, has maintained a 3.63 GPA.

A native of Wallis, Texas, Witte competed in every event for the Cougars this season and contributed to their wins in both the Johnny Morris Invitational and the LSU Tiger Cross Country Festival, finishing fourth individually in both competitions. Earlier this year, Witte clocked a personal record of 18:55 at the Notre Dame Invitational and also ran in the C-USA Championship to help Houston finish in fifth place.

Witte is the first runner to receive an all-academic honor since the 2007 season, when Steve Magness was named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men's Cross Country All-Academic Team.
