Houston Student-Athletes Thank-A-Thon
April 13, 2011
Over 50 University of Houston student-athletes took part in the annual Cougar Pride Thank-A-Thon, calling over 3,000 donors to the department and season ticket holders to deliver personal thanks.
"I really enjoy doing this every year," said senior offensive lineman Chris Thompson. "Sometimes you get the answering machine and just leave an entertaining message, but when you are able to get in touch with the donor and tell them in person how much you appreciate the support that's when you feel the real reward. People want to know who they are donating their money to and that we are making the most of our opportunities."
Cougar Pride is the fundraising arm of the UH Department of Intercollegiate Athletics which raises money for more than 350 student-athlete scholarships. Cougar Pride members are made up of alumni, fans, former student-athletes and coaches and friends who ensure that current student-athletes get a first-class education during their time at Houston.
In this year's Thank-A-Thon, student-athletes from UH's 16 intercollegiate teams were able to express to these donors just how valuable their support is to the growing program. In 2010, the Department was responsible for paying $5.2 million in education costs with just under 50 percent of those dollars donated by loyal Cougar Pride members.
