Houston Athletics Holds 10th Annual Thank-a-thon

    April 23, 2013

HOUSTON - More than 350 student-athletes from all 16 Houston Athletics teams recently participated in the 10th annual Cougar Pride Thank-a-thon, thanking donors that support the athletic programs at the University of Houston through Cougar Pride. The Thank-a-thon began on a Monday night and continued through the following Thursday evening. Student-athletes came together to make personal phone calls to each and every donor in an event created by Cougar Pride in 2004.

"We are extremely grateful for the support we receive to fund student-athlete scholarships," said Associate Athletics Director for External Relations Jeramiah Dickey. "It is important for us to thank those that continue to contribute and what better way to do so than to have those that are truly affected to thank them. It is important for all involved to understand it is not about the benefits received but the opportunities their donations provide.  We believe in the student-athlete experience and our Cougar Pride members provide them opportunities they might otherwise not receive."

This year, Cougar Pride raised $3.1 million in donations from generous Houston Athletics supporters. Each gift to Cougar Pride, no matter the size, directly improves the lives of every Houston student-athlete.

"It's awesome to reach out to the people that support us, it shows that we appreciate everything they do," said Houston volleyball defensive specialist Meredith Ware. "Every sport has an appreciation for the people putting money into their program. Getting to reach out means the world to me and I want to let them know that it's changed my life." Ware, in her junior year, also serves as the president of the Student Athletics Advisory Committee.

Cougar Pride is committed to raising significant funds to offset the cost of ever-increasing athletic scholarships for the outstanding Cougar student-athletes who are fulfilling their dreams. For that same reason, Houston student-athletes cannot say thank you enough. Donations and support are what keeps Houston Athletics consistently thriving and continuing in excellence.
