2011 Coaches' Road Tour Makes Final Stop At Loggia In Sugar Land

HOUSTON - University of Houston coaches and administrators greeted Cougar faithful during the final stop of the Houston Coaches' Road Tour Wednesday night at Loggia in Sugar Land. The UH staff was welcomed by a packed house and spoke about the upcoming 2011-12 season.
Senior Associate Athletics Director Darren Dunn opened the night by announcing some important upcoming dates on the Cougar Athletics calendar. The Fourth Annual Football 101 for Women presented by State Farm will take place July 28 in the Athletics/Alumni Center. The annual Houston Football Fan Appreciation Day will be Aug. 13 and is scheduled to take place at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Fans were also reminded that the Houston Alumni Association will play host to a Texas Hold 'Em Showdown Aug. 25. For more information log on to HoustonAlumni.com.
After Dunn spoke to the crowd, head volleyball coach Molly Alvey kicked off the event. She spoke to the crowd about her summer travels to Beijing, London and Croatia. Alvey said it was a learning experience for her as she was able to interact with coaches around the country and learn new coaching techniques.
Alvey also spoke of the upcoming season that kicks off Aug. 26-27 when the Cougars play host to the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup. They will compete three top-60 teams in Lipscomb, Xavier and Central Arkansas. In addition, the Cougars will play the Israeli National Team on Aug. 31.
Head golf coach Jonathan Dismuke continued the night's events. He spoke about his excitement about the upcoming season and highlighted the three signees that will join the team this fall. According to Dismuke, the three signees will add much needed depth to the team in the spring.
In addition, Dismuke announced the creation of the Dave Williams Golf Academy that will be built at Redstone Golf Club and serve as the home of Houston Cougar Golf. The Cougars will be the only school in the state of Texas that enjoys a golf facility/home course that annually hosts a PGA TOUR event.
The night concluded with head football coach Kevin Sumlin taking to the microphone. He opened by encouraging the women of the crowd to attend the Football 101 clinic Thursday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center. He also announced that former Cougars Isaiah Thompson, Loyce Means and Matangi Tonga each signed free agent contracts this week.
The Houston football team will report to campus on Aug. 4 and then they will hold Media Day and their first practice on Aug. 5.
Dunn returned to the podium to close out the event and announce the winners to the night's drawings. Those winners included Michael Young (UH Baseball Cap), Jon Huffman (UH Golf Balls) and Abe Arguello (Autographed UH Football Poster).
