    Baseball Inks Nine HS Players in Early Signing Period

    Houston Baseball welcomes seven from state of Texas

    Former Cougar letterwinner Anthony Scalise begins his first year as a student assistant coach with the UH Baseball program in 2004.

    In his current capacity, Scalise assists head coach Rayner Noble and the entire UH coaching staff with daily practice responsibilities and helps with other administrative duties, including the Cougars? annual camps.

    In 2002, Scalise walked onto the team before fall drills and made an immediate impact. That was best shown in his first game as a Cougar. After an injury sidelined the Cougars? starter against Texas at the Minute Maid Park College Classic, Scalise was called into duty and responded, batting 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs..

    He appeared in 51 games with 51 starts and was a fixture in the Cougar outfield. By the time that the season ended, Scalise had recorded a .284 batting average with six doubles, 31 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

    Prior to attending UH, Scalise played baseball at Alvin Community College and was a varsity letterwinner for former UH assistant coach David Pierce at Dobie High School.

    He is majoring in kinesiology. The son of Phil and Phyllis Scalise, he was born on Oct. 31, 1980, in Houston. He is single and lives in Houston.
