2006 SEASON (Junior)
Enjoyed one of the nation's finest seasons on the mound and emerged as possibly the greatest two-way player in school history... Received the Dick Howser Trophy and the Brooks Wallace Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate player... Also named the ABCA/Rawlings Player of the Year and Rivals.com National Player of the Year... Became the first player in both UH and C-USA history to be named a baseball national player of the year... Became the first player in both UH and Conference USA history to be taken in the Top 10 picks of the annual amateur draft, being selected at No. 4 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates... Led all pitchers in ERA (1.69), wins (12), complete games (3), shutouts (2), innings pitched (127.2), strikeouts (152) and opposing batting average (.198)... Strikeout total was the third best in UH single-season history and pushed him into third place on the Cougar career charts with 293 punchouts... Recorded at least seven strikeouts in each of his first 10 starts and in 15 of 17 total starts.... Was just as dangerous at the plate... Finished with 14 home runs and a team-best 53 RBIs... Was ranked among the C-USA individual leaders in five of the six Triple Crown categories (batting average was the lone exception)... Joined Woody Williams as the only players in school history to hit a home run and earn a win on the mound in the same game twice in one season... First accomplished that feat in the series opener at UC Irvine... Duplicated that effort less than a month later in the series opener against No. 18 Tulane... Had an all-around day against Texas-San Antonio during the season opener... Made his second consecutive Opening Day start against the Roadrunners... Allowed only two hits with seven strikeouts in five innings on the mound... Went 2-for-6 with two runs and a game-high four RBIs at the plate as the DH... Blasted a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Cougars to the win... Struck out nine while scattering five hits in seven shutout innings to lead UH to its only win at the Houston College Classic over Texas Tech... Also went 2-for-5 with a run at that tournament... Batted 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and home runs against Stephen F. Austin... Struck out eight in 5.1 innings at No. 23 Arizona State during the second game of that series... Batted 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs at No. 23 Arizona State in the second game of that series... Teamed with Dustin Kingsbury to hit back-to-back homers in the third inning of the series finale... Struck out 11 batters while scattering one run off five hits in seven innings against Monmouth in the series opener... Held No. 8 LSU to only two runs off four hits with seven strikeouts in the series opener... Honored as the C-USA Pitcher of the Week following that performance... Did a little of everything in the series opener at UC Irvine... Struck out 12 batters while allowing only two runs off five hits in the complete-game win against the Anteaters... Also broke a tie with a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning... Allowed only three hits with eight strikeouts on the way to the shutout win over Marshall... Faced only two batters over the minimum in that game ... Honored as the C-USA Co-Pitcher of the Week for that performance... Struck out 12 with only one unearned run allowed in eight innings during the East Carolina series opener... Also batted 2-for-4 with a run and RBI against the Pirates... Blasted a solo homer in the middle game of the ECU series... Scored two runs and added two RBIs against McNeese State... Homered for the third consecutive game in the second game of the series against No. 18 Tulane... Held No. 22 Southern Miss to only two runs off five hits with six strikeouts in the series opener... Batted 3-for-5 with a run, double and two RBIs in the second game of the USM series... Launched a mammoth home run to center field at Texas A&M... Struck out 11 with only two runs off eight hits in eight innings during the Memphis series opener... Went 3-for-5 with a double, run and three RBIs... Struck out a season-high 13 in eight innings during the series opener at UAB... Helped his own cause at the plate, batting 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs against the Blazers... Knocked in two runs in the middle game of the UAB series... Batted 2-for-4 at Stephen F. Austin... Struck out nine with only five hits allowed in tossing a shutout win at No. 1 Rice in the series opener... Honored as the Pro-Line Cap National Pitcher of the Week and C-USA Pitcher of the Week following that performance. C-USA Tournament: One of four Cougars named to the All-Tournament Team... Retired 16 of the last 18 batters that he faced and allowed only two baserunners during his final five innings... Helped his own cause at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with a run against the Pirates.. Went 2-for-5 with a solo home runs against No. 11 Tulane to help lead the Cougars to the championship game. NCAA Norman Regional: Went 2-for-3 and scored the team's lone run in the opener against No. 30 Wichita State... Teamed with Matt Weston to hit back-to-back homers at No. 13 Oklahoma.
Named to the Cape Cod League All-Star Game as a starter while playing for the Bourne Braves... Named to the All-Cape Cod League Team as a utility player.. Blasted six home runs with 25 RBIs with a 3-1 record, minuscule 1.32 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 54.0 innings... Received the Manny Robello 10th Player Award... Helped lead Bourne to the West Division championship... Listed as the Cape Cod League's No. 6 prospect by Baseball America magazine.
Was a regular contributor for the Cougars at the plate and on the mound... Appeared in all but one game while finishing second on the team with 52 RBIs and seven home runs... On the mound, was one of only seven players in school history to throw more than 100 strikeouts in a season... Led all UH hurlers with 102.0 innings pitched and two complete games and finished third with four wins and a 4.76 ERA... Finished second on the team with 293 putouts while spending most of his time at first base... Made the Opening Day start against No. 10 Baylor during the first day of the Minute Maid Park College Classic... Went 3-for-5 with two runs, a double and RBI against the Bears... Laced an RBI-double against No. 23 Oklahoma State during the Minute Maid Park College Classic to score the Cougars' first run... Went 2-for-3 with a run, double and RBI against No. 9 Texas A&M during the finale of the Minute Maid Park College Classic... Gave the Cougars the lead for good with a looping RBI-single into shallow center field against Pepperdine in the series opener... Finished the night 2-for-3 with a run and RBI against the Waves... Earned his first win after striking out eight and holding Loyola Marymount to one only earned run in seven innings in the series finale...
