Valuable pitcher who could see time on the mound during Conference USA season but more regularly in the middle of the week...Will also share time at DH and in the outfield....Good all-around player...Must continue to refine his consistency.

Team?s leading hitter with a .317 average... Appeared in 33 games as a hitter and 21 games as a pitcher... Hit and pitched in the same game nine times with the most recent outing coming against Texas-Arlington in the NCAA Regional at Houston... No Cougar started in more positions than Whatley (left field 12 times, DH seven times, right field seven times, center field once and pitcher eight times)... One of just three Cougars with 100 or more at bats who finished above .300... Finished season on 10-for-23 (.434) streak with six RBIs, seven runs and only two strikeouts... Disciplined hitter who drew 15 walks and maintained a .400 on-base percentage... Had two or more hits in a game three times... Slugged two hits in each of the last two games of the series at South Florida (May 12-13)... Converted on 14 of 15 stolen base attempts... Clubbed two doubles at No. 1 ranked Rice (Feb. 21) when he also started and posted his first career pitching victory... Owned a 2-2 record and 7.22 ERA in eight starts... Played in a total of 25 games, including 12 on the mound and 13 as a defensive sub in the outfield... made first career start at pitcher on the road at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles against No. 5 ranked USC...worked 1.2 innings against the Trojans with a no-decision in a game UH went on to win 8-4...also faced eventual College World Series participant Texas for 1.2 frames in his season debut on the hill...10.1 of his 15.2 innings were against quality teams that advanced to NCAA Regionals ...pitched a combined 5.0 shutout innings in two appearances against Regional-bound Southwest Texas State (Feb. 11 & 13)...allowed two hits in a career-long 3.0 frames against the Bobcats...saw mound action in five games against Conference USA competition...fired a perfect inning of relief against South Florida at the C-USA Tournament...also hurled scoreless work in the UAB, Memphis and Saint Louis games...recorded a new career-high when he struck the side on the road at Southern Miss (May 12)...batted .250 (1-for-4), all in replacement duty...hit safely against Memphis with two outs already recorded in the inning...scored after entering the game as pinch-runner in the Championship Final of the C-USA Tournament and a week later in the Regional against Rice...made two grabs facing the sun on sharply hit fly balls to left in the bottom of the ninth inning that saved a shut out (for Shane Nance) over Charlotte at the C-USA Tournament.

Appeared in a total of 24 games, the most by any true freshman on the team...played in 21 games in the field and in five games as a relief pitcher...hit and pitched in the same game twice, at Memphis (April 3) and against Southwestern Louisiana (May 30)...was 3-for-9 (.333) with a walk in 10 appearances as a pinch hitter...ten other appearances were as a defensive sub in the outfield...made first career start in centerfield at nationally-ranked Rice (April 13)...collected a career-high two hits, including an RBI-double and scored a run in the game he pulled double-duty at Memphis...batted .261 overall and .286 against CUSA competition...worked a season-long 1.2 innings on the mound against USL... recorded innings vs. College World Series participant Cal State Fullerton and NCAA regional-bound Southern Miss...made first collegiate pitching appearance against Oklahoma (Feb. 19)..struck out a season-high two batters at Memphis.

Was named the state?s Class 3A Player of the Year by Texas Sports Writers Association as a senior in 1998...three-time all-state selection at Atlanta High School who led the squad to the 1998 state championship...was named the District 15-3A most valuable player two times ...coached in baseball by Randy Raley...also earned all-state honors as a quarterback for the football team.
