Baseball Drops Series Finale to No. 6 Arizona State

HOUSTON - No. 6 Arizona State scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back in taking an 11-1 win over the University of Houston baseball team on Sunday during the final day of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 2-2, while No. 6 Arizona State improved to 5-1.
Junior Bryan Pounds provided the only Cougar run in the second inning with a one-out, solo homer to left field, his first long ball of the 2007 season. The Houston native also made his collegiate debut on the mound, tossing 0.2 innings in relief.
ASU starter Josh Satow limited the Cougars to only one run off six hits with eight strikeouts in tossing the complete-game win and improved to 2-0. UH freshman southpaw Wes Musick, making his second start of the week, collected the loss and fell to 1-1 after allowing five runs (four earned) off six hits in two innings.
Five different ASU hitters recorded at least two hits in the game with Matt Spencer batting 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Ike Davis, Kiel Roling, Petey Paramore and Andrew Romine each rapped out two hits in the game to lead the Sun Devil offense, which outhit the Cougars 15-6.
The Cougars return to action at 7 p.m., Tuesday, when they play host to Sam Houston State at the friendly confines of Cougar Field. The Sun Devils struck first in the first inning with four runs off four hits and a Cougar infield error. Eric Sogard blasted a home run to right field to lead off, while Davis added an RBI-double. Paramore posted an RBI-single in the frame, and C.J. Retherford's sacrifice fly capped the ASU scoring.
Brett Wallace laced an RBI-single in the second inning to score Sogard and pushed the ASU lead to 5-0.
The Cougars put their first mark on the scoreboard in the second inning when Pounds smashed a 2-2 offering over the left-field wall.
ASU added another run in the fourth inning when Andrew Romine scored on a balk after leading off with a single. Two innings later, Sogard's infield groundout scored Mike Leake, who led off with a double down the left-field line.
The Sun Devils would go on to score another single run in the sixth inning and two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings for the final margin of victory.
