NUMBERS OF NOTE

1 Freshman Jake Lemoine picked up his first collegiate win in just his second relief appearance this season to improve to 1-0.

3 The Cougars scored three runs on a bases loaded walk and hit-by-pitch in the top of the ninth inning.

6 Six Cougars picked up a hit in tonight's win, led by freshmen Kyle Kirk and Kyle Survance with two hits each.

77 Houston won its 77th game all-time against SHSU, breaking up a 76-76 series tie in the two team's 153rd meeting.

With the win, Houston improved to 3-1 and 1-0 on the road, while Sam Houston State fell to 1-3 and 0-1 at home.

Tied at 3-3 heading into the top of the ninth, Houston manufactured three runs to take the late lead on a bases loaded walk and hit-by-pitch, along with a sacrifice fly.

The young pitching duo of sophomore Aaron Garza (6.0,6,3,2,0,3) and freshman Jake Lemoine (3.0,2,0,0,0,1) combined to hold a strong Bearkat offense to just two earned runs on eight hits--six of which were infield hits.

Houston tallied eight hits of its own, led by freshmen Kyle Kirk (2x3, RBI) and Kyle Survance (2x4, R, RBI, BB) each with two hits. Adding RBIs to the mix were freshman Justin Montemayor (1x3, 2 R, RBI, BB), sophomore Chris Waylock (1x1, RBI), freshman Ashford Fulmer (RBI, SF) and junior Jonathan Davis (RBI, SF). Juniors Frankie Ratcliff (1x5) and Caleb Barker (1x4, R) added a base hit to the mix.

Sam Houston State went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning after the Cougars committed two errors without Garza allowing a single hit. Houston then quickly bounced back with a run on two hits as the freshman duo of Survance and Kirk strung together consecutive knocks to tie the game at 1-1.

The Bearkats responded with a solo homerun to open the bottom of the second--putting them up by a run. Garza settled in after allowing back-to-back hits, but then went on to retire the next three hitters to escape any more damage.

The Cougars had a chance to even the score in the top of the third when leadoff hitter Vidales reached on a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, but was stranded after Sam Houston retired the next three Cougars.

Montemayor led off the top of the fourth with a deep double to left center, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Davis as Houston took a 2-1 lead. The Bearkats then went back up by a run after consecutive singles in the latter half of the fifth, which led to a sacrifice fly.

Garza retired a 1-2-3 fifth inning for his seventh straight retired batter to keep the Bearkats in check offensively, but Houston struggled to push runs across in the sixth, stranding bases loaded.

After Sam Houston State went back up 3-2, Appling led off the top of the seventh by reaching on an error. Ratcliff and Barker loaded the bases on a single and hit-by-pitch, respectively, allowing Montemayor to drive in the tying run on a sacrifice fly.

Garza left after 6.0 complete innings with the score tied at 3-3 and received the no decision. The Galveston, Texas native, allowed just two earned runs on six hits without surrendering a walk with three strikeouts.

Lemoine took over the seventh in relief of Garza to work an impressive 3.0 innings with a solid defensive effort late by the Cougars, which included an outfield double play assist by Appling in centerfield and an up-the-middle snag by shortstop Ratcliff.

Despite stranding 13 base runners, Houston secured the win by manufacturing base runners.

POST-GAME QUOTE
Head Coach Todd Whitting
On tonight's win
"I'm really proud of the guys tonight. This was a big win for us as it was the first time to be on the road for a lot of these players. We competed really well. That was my challenge to the team tonight. We competed from the time the game started to the last pitch was thrown. There were plenty of times to shut down, but they kept grinding and that is championship baseball."
