Nacogdoches, Texas - The University of Houston baseball team put up four runs in the first inning on their way to a 7-5 win over Stephen F. Austin Tuesday afternoon in Nacogdoches, Texas at Jaycees Field.

Houston's four runs in the first inning were enough to take the early lead, one they would never relinquish on the afternoon. Sophomore Blake Kelso opened the game with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Kelso would advance to third when junior Zak Presley reached base on an error and score on a ground out RBI to second base by sophomore Chase Dempsay.

Junior Chris Wallace followed that up with a walk and sophomore Caleb Ramsey reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded junior William Kankel hit a single to right field scoring Wallace and Presley. UH put one more run on the board in the inning in their next at bat when freshman David Murphy reached on a fielder's choice and Ramsey scored on a throwing error by the second base.

The Cougars added to their total in the third inning. With two outs and two runners on base, Murphy hit a single through the left side to score Wallace who reached base on a walk. Murphy wouldn't be on base long as freshman Taylor White hit a double down the left field line scoring Murphy and Ramsey, who singled to left field.

UH gave up three runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to give a bit of the game's momentum to Stephen F. Austin.

The `Jacks did aim for a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning, putting two runners on base with one out and scoring one run on a double to left field by leadoff hitter Zack Gardner. They would put up a final run in the inning but Houston would be able to hold on for the win.

Freshman Michael Goodnight made his first career start on the mound pitching 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, three hits, two walks and striking out two batters.

With the win, Houston improves to 2-2 on the season.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for a single game against cross-town rival Rice. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Reckling Park. Following the Wednesday game against the Owls, Houston will play in the Houston College Classic this weekend at Minute Maid Park. Friday's game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start against Baylor. The tournament will continue at noon on Saturday against UC Irvine and will conclude at 6 p.m. on Sunday against Texas A&M.
