Houston Drops 4-2 Contest to Missouri

HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball suffered a 4-2 loss to Missouri in Game 1 of the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas on Friday despite a 12-strikeout performance by Cougar starter Seth Romero.

With the loss, the Cougars fall to 3-2 on the year, while Missouri improved to 5-1 with the win.

The Cougars will continue the weekend with two more games in the Kleberg College Classic at Whataburger Field (home of Astros' AA affiliate -- Corpus Christi Hooks).

Starter Seth Romero struck out 12 for the second straight time this season, but would suffer his first loss, falling to 1-1, after allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks in 5.2 innings pitched.

Junior reliever Joey Pulido made a strong relief appearance, striking out one and not surrendering a hit in his 2.1 innings out of the bullpen.

4th | Down 2-0, Houston scored its first run of the game on a solo home run by junior Jake Scheiner -- the Cougars' first home run of the year -- to make it a 2-1 game.

6th | Houston would go on to tie the game at 2-2 when junior Connor Wong belted his first home run of the year. Missouri would use a big two-out, two-run single to break open the even score and go ahead 4-2.

Missouri starter Andy Toellken (6.1,7,2,2,0,4) struck out four and allowed two runs in 6.1 innings en route to his first win of the year, while reliever TJ Sikkema (2.2,0,0,0,0,3) picked up the save in 2.2 innings.

The Tigers posted seven hits, led by Robbie Glendinning and Matt Berler with two hits each.
