The Baytown native faced the minimum through the first three innings and retired seven of the last nine batters that he faced to collect the win. UH sophomore southpaw Wes Musick and Tully combined to throw the final three shutout innings and hand the Cougars their eighth win in their last nine home games against the Bobcats. The Cougar pitching trio limited the Bobcats to only three hits. Meanwhile, the Cougar offense continued its recent hot streak with eight runs off eight hits and three Texas State errors. UH scored at least one run through each of the first three innings and never trailed in the game Senior outfielder Jake Stewart provided the highlight of the night with a grand slam in the second inning to help the Cougars seize control of the game. The Santa Fe native finished the night 3-for-4 with a run and four RBIs, while freshman shortstop Blake Kelso went 2-for-3 with three runs extend his season-opening hitting streak to four games. Senior outfielder/pitcher Bryan Tully added a pair of runs in the winning effort. Texas State starter Zack Boles collected the loss and fell to 0-1 after giving up six runs (four earned) off three hits and three walks in three innings. The Cougars continue a busy week when they face No. 6 Rice at 4 p.m., Wednesday at Reckling Park in Game One of the annual Silver Glove Series. Although the two teams have been Conference USA rivals for the last two years, Wednesday's game will be a non-conference showdown between the two teams. Sophomore southpaw Donnie Joseph will make his first start of the season against the Owls, while Rice will counter with sophomore righthander Mike Ojala. Rice, which posted an 11-7 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday, has posted a 73-67 lead in the all-time series, which began in 1948 and has been played at least twice every year since 1972. The Owls bring a two-game winning streak over the Cougars into Wednesday's game. For the first time in 2008, the Cougars scored first in their first at-bat. After back-to-back, leadoff singles by Blake Kelso and Jake Stewart and a balk put runners on second and third, Ryan Lormand lifted a sacrifice fly into left field for a 1-0 Cougar lead. In the second inning, the Cougars took control of the game with four runs thanks to Stewart's grand-slam, opposite-field home run to right field. After Dempsay reached on an error, Chris Wallace walked and Kelso was hit by a pitch, Stewart launched the first pitch he saw over the wall. One inning later the Cougars pushed another run across when Bryan Tully scored all the way from first base when Dempsay's high pop up in the infield was misplayed. Texas State put its first mark on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Paul Goldschmidt's sacrifice fly scored Adam Witek from third base. In the bottom of the inning, Kelso and Stewart led off with back-to-back singles for the second time in the first four innings and after a passed ball moved both runners up, Lormand lifted his second sacrifice fly of the night to plate Kelso for a 7-1 UH lead. Lormand became only the sixth player in school history to record two sacrifice flies in a game and the first since 2006 national player of the year Brad Lincoln accomplished the feat at Cincinnati during the nightcap of a doubleheader on April 3, 2005. The score remained that way until the seventh inning when the Cougars plated a run with out a run. Bryan Tully walked and moved into scoring position after a wild pitch, stole third base and scored on an errant throw to third base.
