King, Freshmen Lead Houston to Road Win

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Highlighted by a complete-game pitching performance from senior John King and a strong offensive production by Houston Baseball freshmen, the Cougars earned a 4-2 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday in the final game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.

With the win, the Cougars moved to 5-2 on the year and finished the weekend at Whataburger Field, 2-1 with wins over Illinois and the Islanders.

Senior John King had a career-day on the mound, tossing his first career complete game -- surpassing his previous long outing of 7.0 innings last weekend vs. Wake Forest. He was backed by an offensive effort led by four freshmen as the newcomers combined for five of Houston's eight hits and drove in three of the four RBI.

The Cougars will wrap up the Kleberg College Classic at Whataburger Field (home of Astros' AA affiliate -- Corpus Christi Hooks) with a 3 p.m. first pitch Sunday against tournament-host Texas A&M-CC.

Pitching Breakdown:

Starter John King went the distance for the first time in his career and struck out seven, while allowing just two runs on eight hits with no walks to move to 1-0 on the year.

2nd | Houston freshmen came out of the gates swinging in the second as Lockhart got things started with a one-out single and with two outs, Bielamowicz walked in his first career at-bat to keep the inning alive. Etzel then followed through with an RBI-single, scoring Lockhart for the 1-0 lead.

4th | After Texas A&M-Corpus Christi plated a run in the third on two infield singles, the Cougars responded with a run in the fourth with another big inning by the freshmen in the 5-8 holes. Triolo singled with one out, advanced to third on Bielamowicz's double (first career hit) and later scored on an RBI-groundout by Etzel (second RBI of the game).

5th | The Cougars made it a 4-1 game in the fifth when Connor Wong walked, moved to second on a Grayson Padgett sac bunt, and scored on a Scheiner RBI-single, moving Davis to third (after he walked), who then came around to score on an RBI-fielder's choice by Lockhart.

9th | Texas A&M-CC scored its second run of the game on back-to-back doubles in the ninth, but King was able to escape any further damage for the win.

Texas A&M-CC fell to 1-6 on the year following Sunday's loss. The Islanders were led offensively by Brian Deaver, who went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Starter Cole Carter (4.0,4,3,3,2,0) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits and two walks in 4.0 innings.
