    Final Stats

HOUSTON - Eighth-ranked Long Beach State took advantage of three hits and a pair of Cougar errors in the sixth inning to break a tie on the way to a 4-1 win over the University of Houston baseball team on Saturday in the second game of a non-conference series at Cougar Field.

After loading the bases with one out in the sixth, the 49ers reclaimed the lead for good when Mike Hofius reached on a fielder's choice that was misplayed in the Cougar infield, allowing Josh Buhagiar to score from third. Following a Cougar pitching change, Troy Tulowitzki slapped a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Jason Vargas and Brad Davis.

That would be all the run support that Long Beach State starter Cesar Ramos would need to improve to 2-1. Ramos held the Cougars to only one run off four hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. UH starter Garrett Mock dropped to 0-3 after giving up four runs (two earned) with a strikeout in 5.1 innings.

49er reliever Neil Jamison earned his team-leading fifth save after pitching a shutout ninth inning.

Buhagiar batted 2-for-3 with a run to lead Long Beach State, while Tulowitzki added a game-high two RBIs.

Brett Cooley, Stuart Musslewhite, Nick Bott and Thanos Papavasiliou recorded the Cougars' only hits in the game.

Long Beach State grabbed the lead in the second inning when Hofius scored on a Cougar infield error after leading off the frame with a double down the right field line.

The Cougars rallied in the fourth inning with a run of their own. Musslewhite slapped a two-out triple down the left field line and scored after inducing a balk from Ramos.
