    Final Stats

HOUSTON - Jeff Jorgensen's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth lifted No. 1 Rice to a 4-3 win over the University of Houston baseball team on Tuesday in Game Two of the Silver Glove Series at Reckling Park.

The Owls (12-1) loaded the bases with no outs after a leadoff single by Paul Janish and back-to-back walks. Jorgensen then ripped a slicing fly ball down the right field line that was caught by UH's diving Matt Farrington. However, Janish raced in to score the game-winning run ahead of Farrington's throw into the infield.

The loss spoiled a valiant comeback by the Cougars, who knotted the game in the eighth inning with three runs off four hits. After three consecutive one-out hits from Hyung Cho, Thanos Papavasiliou and Stuart Musslewhite, Farrington pulled the Cougars to within a run with a two-RBI double in the left-center gap. Musslewhite then scored the tying run after a wild pitch from Rice reliever David Aardsma got away from catcher Jeff Blackinton.

Those runs snapped an 18-inning scoreless streak by the Cougars against Rice, dating back to the final game of the 2002 Silver Glove Series.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the ninth when Janish led off with a leadoff single up the middle to start the Rice rally.

With the win, Rice upped its advantage in the Silver Glove Series to 2-0 after taking a 3-0 win at Cougar Field on Feb. 18. Game Three of the Series returns to Cougar Field at 7 p.m., March 19.

Aardsma improved to 2-0 despite allowing a run off two hits in 1.2 innings of relief. UH reliever Brian Henderson dropped to 0-1 after allowing a run off a hit in 1.1 innings of relief.

Musslewhite went 2-for-4 with a run to lead the Cougar offense, which outhit Rice 9-8 in the game. Farrington led all players with two RBIs, while Gabe Lucas went 2-for-3 with a walk. Cho extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in his final at-bat to start the Cougar rally.

Vincent Sinisi went 2-for-4 with two runs, a home run and an RBI, while Austin Davis 2-for-3 with a run. Janish also added a pair of hits with a run in the winning effort.

Sinisi put Rice on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a solo shot to right field to lead off the frame. The Owls pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the sixth inning when Rice starter Wade Townsend helped his own cause with an RBI-single and Craig Stansberry lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Davis.

The Cougars return to action this weekend as they play host to Northwestern State in a three-game, non-conference series. The series begins with 7 p.m. games on both Friday and Saturday before ending at 1 p.m. Sunday.
