HOUSTON - Loyola Marymount took advantage of three hits and two hit batters to score three runs in the seventh inning and break a tie on the way to a 7-4 win over the University of Houston baseball team Friday in the opener of a non-conference series at Cougar Field.
The Cougars rallied from a 4-0 deficit after one-and-a-half innings and tied the game in the fourth inning on RBI-singles from Dustin Kingsbury and Kori Williams. However, that would be all the Cougars would score the rest of the way.
In the seventh inning, Josh Bradbury's RBI-single to right field scored James Cooper and started the Lion rally. With the bases loaded, Jon Oller was hit by a pitch, forcing in Kyle Mura from third base. Pinch-hitter Jason Lefkowitz's infield groundout then allowed Joe Frazee to score and give the Lions the lead for good.
UH reliever Shea Hancock collected the loss and dropped to 0-2 after giving up one run off one hit with a pair of strikeouts in one inning. LMU starter Stephen Kahn improved to 1-0 after holding the Cougars to only four runs off seven hits with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
LMU reliever Jeff Stevens earned his first save of the season after holding the Cougars scoreless in the ninth inning.
Making his first collegiate start, freshman outfielder Kori Williams went 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Cougar offense. Sophomore outfielder Jake Stewart also went 2-for-5 with a stolen base in the losing effort.
Frazee went 3-for-3 with a run to lead the LMU offense, which rapped out 10 hits in the game. Josh Bradbury went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and James Cooper batted 2-for-5 with a run for the Lions.
The series continues at 2 p.m., Saturday before wrapping up at 1 p.m., Sunday.
Saturday's game will be Internet only, while Sunday's game can be heard live on KGBC 1540 AM with both games being called by former Cougar players Nick Torina and Pat Cauley. Fans also can follow the action by clicking on the "Gametracker" link at www.UHCougars.com.
LMU took advantage of three hits and two UH infield errors to grab the early lead with four runs in the second inning. John Bradbury's sacrifice fly scored Kyle Mura, while Jon Oller's double down the left field line plated Evan Shahak.
After Brandon DiTolla reached on the final UH error of the inning, Chris Pettit's bunt single scored Oller. Elvis Herrera's looping double into shallow center field plated Pettit to cap the Lion scoring.
In the bottom of the frame, the Cougars cut that deficit in half, though. After back-to-back walks to Brad Lincoln and Kevin Roberts to lead off the inning and a groundout, Farrington laced a single into right field to plate both runners.
The score remained that way until the fourth inning when the Cougars knotted the game at 4-4. After Kevin Roberts laced a double off the left-field wall to lead off, Dustin Kingsbury slapped an RBI-single into center field. Following a walk to Brett Logan, Kori Williams smacked a single into left field to plate Kingsbury and tie the game.
