Baseball Comeback Falls Short Against UTSA, 14-8

HOUSTON - Despite scoring five runs in the fifth inning, the University of Houston baseball team was unable to come away with a win against UTSA Wednesday night at Cougar Field. The Cougars lost 14-8 to the Roadrunners and fall to 2-8 on the season. The Cougars jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Blake Kelso led off with a single to left field. He would cross home when Chase Dempsay hit a double to left and Houston would cap the inning when Dempsay scored off a single to right field from William Kankel. UTSA took the lead in the third inning scoring for runs, including a two run home run from Jose Hernandez. They followed that up with two runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Matt Murphy led off for the Cougars in the fourth inning with a double to right center. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out to second base by Taylor White. Houston continued the comeback in the fifth inning scoring one run to pull within one, 9-8. Blake Kelso, Zak Presley and Dempsay all reached base on a single. Kelso scored when Dempsay reached base and Caleb Ramsey loaded the bases once again with a bunt to third base. Presley was thrown out at home when Kankel reached on a fielder's choice, while Matt Murphy plated Dempsay with a single to left field. David Murphy came in to pinch hit for Taylor White and scored Ramsey on a sacrifice fly. For the third time in the inning, Codey Morehouse loaded the bases on a walk and John Cannon singled to shortstop to score Kankel. In his second at bat of the inning, Kelso reach on a walk, scoring Matt Murphy to cap the Cougars scoring in the fifth. But the Roadrunners would knock the wind out of the Cougars' sails by scoring five runs in the seventh inning to take back the lead 14-8. LOOOKING AHEAD
