HOUSTON -
Despite starter Andrew Lantrip throwing a complete game and Jacob Campbell belting his first homerun of the season, No. 8 Houston Baseball wasn't able to overcome its early deficit, falling 4-2 to No. 2 LSU in Game 1 of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park Friday night.

With the loss, the Cougars fell to 8-6 on the season, while LSU improved to 13-1 with the win.

Lantrip (8.0,9,4,3,0,2) pitched his first complete game of his career, going 8.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. He was tagged with his first loss of the season, falling to 3-1 on the year despite the strong effort.

Houston was held to just four hits on the evening, led by Campbell's (2x4, R, RBI) two base hits, including a solo homerun. Junior Kyle Survance (1x4, R) scored the first Cougar run and led off the game with a ground rule double into right center, while junior Josh Vidales (1x3) picked up the other lone Houston hit.

With Vidales' single, the second baseman has reached base in all 13 games played.

LSU took an early lead with three runs in the first inning after an RBI-single and a two-run homerun.

It took until the third inning, but Houston managed to take advantage of an LSU error, allowing Survance to score following a Campbell single. The Tigers would then grab a three-run lead at 4-1 when Houston tried the nail the lead runner at third, but the throw went high and two bases were granted.

Campbell opened the top of the sixth with his first homerun of the year and fourth of his career on a solo shot to right center that found the outfield seats, narrowing LSU's lead to 4-2.

What proved to be a pitchers' duel ended in favor of the Tigers as both starters recorded quality starts in the contest.

LSU starter Jared Poche' (7.2,4,2,2,3,4) earned the win, tossing 7.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Jesse Stallings (1.0,0,0,0,0,1) picked up the save, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Todd Whitting
"Andrew Lantrip was outstanding. That's a really good hitting team. They're hitting about .340 or .350 as a team. He made a mistake, and the guy cashed in and took advantage of it. He only threw 90 pitches in the entire outing so he was awesome."

"Poche' [LSU starter] is a good pitcher. If we're going to get to where we're trying to go we have to learn to handle guys like that. I see us battling at the plate. We have a good team. The game is real hard for us right now. It's extremely hard for us. We'll catch some breaks here pretty soon. We're going to keep playing with a ton of energy, but we'll turn it around."

Sophomore RHP Andrew Lantrip
On the first inning...
"In the first inning, I made a couple of bad pitches. They are a great offensive team. When you make bad pitches, they execute on them."

On adding other pitches to the mix
"That is pretty much what all college hitters do is look for fastball and they jump on it. Luckily they were able to get under a few and then we started pitching backwards and mixing it up in counts and it got them off balance and we were able to get some ground balls and flyouts."

On low pitch counts
"I was just trying to get first pitch strikes and let the hitters get themselves out. Our philosophy is trying to get them out in four pitches."

On batting for Rice
"When I went up to bat, I was just trying to make contact and make them play with the ball, that's all you can do. I wasn't expecting to hit a double I was just trying to put the ball in play and make them play with it."

On success this season
"It's not just one pitch, it's a number of things. Getting ahead in the count, body language, mound presence, the development of secondary pitches and knowing that I have a great defense behind and knowing I don't have to do it on my own."
