WACO, Texas - Eighth-ranked Baylor exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings and never looked back in taking a 15-4 win over the University of Houston baseball team on Tuesday at Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears (15-5), who rapped out 19 hits in the game, scored one run in the first inning and three in the second frame before erupting for six runs in their third at-bat. It was the second consecutive win for the Bears over UH this season after taking a 14-4 win during the first day of the Minute Maid Park College Classic on Feb. 14.
UH starter Gene Flores (0-1) collected his first loss of the year after giving up six runs off seven hits in 2.1 innings. Baylor starter Mark McCormick (1-0) recorded his first win of the year after scattering five hits and three hits in six innings of work.
Freshman outfielder Matt Farrington and junior outfielder Gabe Lucas each went 2-for-4 while Farrington added a run and triple. Meanwhile, Lucas extended his hitting streak to a season-best six straight games.
Trey Webb batted 2-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs, while David Murphy went 2-for-6 with three RBIs to pace the Baylor attack.
In the first inning, the Bears struck for one run on Ross Bennett's RBI-triple down the right field line. In their next appearances at the plate, Baylor struck for three runs on four hits. Trey Webb provided the highlight of the inning with a two-run homer over the left field wall.
Baylor pushed its lead to double digits in the third inning with six runs with Chris Durbin's three-run blast to right center field leading the way.
The Cougars cut into the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Matt Farrington led off with a triple down the right field line and scored when Nick Bott reached on a Baylor infield error. After a single by Cole Bruce and walk to Gabe Lucas loaded the bases, Travis Tully plated two Cougar runners with a single through the right side of the infield for a 10-3 Baylor lead.
Baylor added five more runs in the seventh inning with Paul Witt ripping a two-RBI double and David Murphy lacing a two-RBI single in the frame to cap the Bear scoring.
Pinch-hitter Michael Bourn reached on a two-base Baylor error in the outfield and eventually came around to score on Bruce's infield groundout in the ninth inning for the final margin of defeat.
